Inside-Out umbrella

iF Design Award Winner, Lebens(t)räume 2009

My Role

I led the entire process, from the initial idea to creating the prototype. I developed the concept, designed the inside-out mechanism, and built the prototype, ensuring it was both practical and stylish. My work focused on solving the common problems of traditional umbrellas while offering an eco-friendly and fashionable solution. This project earned me the 'iF/Lebens(t)räume Award - Winner 2009,' recognizing the innovative approach and design excellence.

Concept

The inside-out umbrella is designed to address the common issues associated with traditional umbrellas—mess and inconvenience caused by wet surfaces. Unlike conventional umbrellas, which leave the outer surface wet and difficult to manage indoors, the inside-out umbrella features a unique mechanism that turns the outer layer inward when closed. This innovative design not only traps the wet surface inside but also reveals a dry inner layer that can be easily handled.

When closed, the umbrella transforms into a compact, bag-like shape that is both easy to carry and drip-free. The dry inner layer prevents water from dripping onto floors or other belongings, making it ideal for indoor use. Additionally, the inside-out umbrella offers a customizable aesthetic; the inner layer can be decorated with a variety of colors and patterns, allowing it to double as a fashionable accessory.

The inside-out umbrella is more than just a practical tool for rainy days—it's a stylish and eco-friendly solution to the problems of wet and cumbersome umbrellas. By eliminating the need for disposable covers and minimizing mess, this umbrella contributes to a cleaner environment and a more convenient user experience.
